THE FOOTBALL SEASON BEGINS

Some call this the best time of the year, others not so best, depending on your perspective on things.  So with weather feeling more like summer and the dog-days of baseball season, we begin anew the football season.  But if you’re me, it’s not really football season until Green Bay plays on a truly frozen tundra and the Chicago Bears slip and slide  in a blizzard. But for now—let the games begin!
As the season goes on we will have some tidbits…like…

WEEKLY FEELING SORRY FOR

This will feature games that, well—-weren’t all that close of games from the college football world.
This was the first week of the college football season and it was easy to find some examples.

BRONZE…LOUISVILLE 73 MURRAY STATE 10…The football week now begins on Thursdays (sometimes earlier then that).  This season began with a handful of games on Thursday and it didn’t take long to get the first embarrassing score in the books.

SILVER…OKLAHOMA 79 NORTH TEXAS ST 10…Sometimes I wonder what goes into the thought process on what games are televised and what aren’t.  Who was the genius in the Fox Sports Programming department that decided that this game should be on TV?

GOLD…MOUNT UNION 75 AVERETTE 7….If there was a Hall of Fame for such a thing, this game would be in the Blow-Out Hall Of Fame.   There will be more one-sided games overall, in fact there are on this list, but Mount Union, the Division III defending champions broke a college football record when they led after the first quarter 52-0.  Running back Nate Kmich rushed for four touch-downs in the quarter.

HONORABLE MENTION…Appalachian State 34 Michigan 32…This was a game that figured to have a chance to make this list for the reason’s stated above.  Sometimes the little guy wins…sometimes.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL READY TO START…
The high school football regular season starts the weekend of September 7th.  A quick preview of what looks like the top teams this season.

No. 1 Casa Grande…The Gauchos have won five of the last seven Sonoma County League Titles and are heavy favorites to add another trophy this season.   Casa Grande reached the North Coast Section Championship game in 2003 and 2004, losing close games each season.  This maybe the season they get that first NCS Title.

No. 2 Montgomery…The defending NBL Champions return most of the players from last season.   Casa is an easy pick in the SCL.  Montgomery isn’t so easy because of

No. 3 Cardinal Newman…loses a lot of players from last years State Championship Game team but the old phrase “reload instead of rebuild” relates here.  This team reminds me of the team two seasons ago when they got off to a tough start with the brutal pre-league schedule, and then went on to win everything.

No. 4 Rancho Cotate….Contender most seasons for the NBL title.  One disadvantage they have this season is their home field is being remodeled.  So they play every game on the road.    Talk about a bit of bad timing; it was their turn to host Montgomery and Cardinal Newsman.

No. 5 Healdsburg…..It looks like the Hounds have the best quarterback/wide receiver combo in the area.   If there defense can hang in there, they might have a surprise or two in store.

TOP WEEK 1 GAMES:
SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 8TH…CARDINAL NEWMAN AT CENTRAL CATHOLIC…These to Division III heavyweights open the season for the third straight year, the two teams trading home wins.  Last season Cardinal Newman won 22-14 in a game that turned out to be a playoff game for the Division III state championship game and may turn out to be that again this season.   The win also snapped Central Catholic’s 61 game winning streak, the 2nd longest streak in California Football History.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 9TH…..LINCOLN OF SAN FRANCISCO AT MONTGOMERY…The two teams combined for a 22-5 record last season.  Both teams also went to their sections championship game.

COMING SOON….GO NINERS…..THE NFL REGULAR SEASON STARTS THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 6TH, NEW ORLEANS AT INDIANAPOLIS.
THE NINERS FIRST GAME IS ON MONDAY NIGHT!! SEPTEMBER 10TH WHEN THEY HOST ARIZONA.
AND OH YEAH THE RAIDERS HOST DETROIT SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 9TH
