HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEW WEEK 4….

September 26th, 2007 . by JoetheSportsGuy

After three weeks of preleague play we get on with the league races with Cardinal Newman in the NBL and Casa Grande in the SCL holding the favorites rolls. More…A couple of notes:

The Sonoma County League won the preleague matchups with the North Bay League with a 7-5-2 record.
Santa Rosa and Healdsburg were the only two teams in each league to go 3-0.
Casa Grande and Sonoma also went undefeated, both having ties so they are 2-0-1.

NORTH BAY LEAGUE PREVIEWS:

FRIDAY NIGHT
RANCHO COTATE(2-1) AT CARDINAL NEWMAN(1-1-1)…What an opener between two teams that are mentioned as favorites in the NBL race. If their first three games are any clue there should be some points. Rancho Cotate games have average 50 points, Cardinal Newman 76 (that’s both teams combined). Cardinal Newman has won four straight from Rancho Cotate including a 26-23 Double Overtime win in the 2005 North Coast Section Playoffs.

SANTA ROSA (3-0) AT UKIAH (1-1-1)…Santa Rosa gets the long road trip out of the way. Santa Rosa has scored more point then any one else in the NBL and given up less after three games. Ukiah after two games decided in the fourth quarter(one tie, one loss) easily handled Eureka last week. A win by Santa Rosa will give them more wins then they had all of last season.

ELSIE ALLEN (0-3) AT MONTGOMERY (1-1-1)…Montgomery is on the list as a contender in the NBL race. They should get a offense going that has struggled the last two weeks. Gutsy effort last week after being controlled for most of the first three quarters to tie Casa Grande.
Tough break for Elsie Allen last week as the let a fourth quarter lead slip away vs. Richmond and then according to the report in the Press Democrat having the game shortened because of lightning. Montgomery has won two of the last three NBL crowns.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON
MARIA CARRILLO (0-3) AT PINER (1-2)…Just when it look promising for Piner disciplinary problems cost them their quarterback for four weeks. Maria Carrillo took a promising step with a close game with Sonoma after two one sided losses. Maria Carrillo has won the last three meetings.
SONOMA COUNTY LEAGUE PREVIEWS:
FRIDAY NIGHT
EL MOLINO (2-1) AT ANALY (1-2)…One of two rivalry games that are usually at the end of the season kick off league play. This is the Golden Apple Bowl between the two schools from the West County. El Molino’s Junior Tony DeMarco leads the area in rushing averaging 218 yards a game. They take into the game a two game winning streak, first time they can claim that since the first two games of 2005. Analy’s two losses are by a combined 16 points…12 of those last week to Santa Rosa. A win for El Molino gives them more wins then all of last season.
HEALDSBURG (3-0) AT SONOMA (2-0-1)…Healdsburg takes a step up in class. Their three wins are against teams with a combined 1-8 record. Sonoma is rated higher then Healdsburg in the Cal Preps computer rankings. Only the fourth quarter against Ukiah cost Sonoma a perfect 3-0 starts.
REDWOOD (0-3) AT WINDSOR (2-1)…Windsor has to wait one more week before opening league play. Nice bounce back win last week after the loss to Santa Rosa. This is a 3A game so it means something as far as North Coast Section Playoff Eligibility stands. Redwood opened the season with a 25-20 loss to Petaluma. The record of the teams that have beaten them are a combined 8-1.
SATURDAY
CASA GRANDE (2-0-1) AT PETALUMA (2-1)…The Annual Egg Bowl. Both teams coming off disappointing games. Casa Grande let a 17-3 fourth quarter lead slip away in the tie with Montgomery. Petaluma was handled by Rancho Cotate 41-21. Casa Grande has gone 23-1 in Sonoma County League Play the last four years, the only loss was to Healdsburg in 2005. The last time Petaluma beat Casa Grande was in 2002, which is also the last time they won the SCL crown.
