SONOMA COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEW…WEEK 8

October 24th, 2007 . by JoetheSportsGuy

Three weeks to go in the league races and games with playoff implications…

A Note…Basing playoff info from the numbers at Cal Preps and the understanding that you need to be .500 either overall or against your division to be playoff eligible.
Teams who has cinched playoff eligibility(if I read all the info right):
3A…Cardinal Newman, Rancho Cotate and Santa Rosa from the NBL…Casa Grande and Sonoma for the SCL
2A…Healdsburg

NBL
MONTGOMERY (3-3-1, 2-2) at SANTA ROSA (6-1, 3-1)…There was a time this was the rivalry of Sonoma County. Santa Rosa fans still think it is so they will be fired up for this. How things can change quickly. For example on this series…according to the Press Democrat Santa Rosa hasn’t beaten Montgomery since 1990 and Jason Frenchi has a lifetime record of 24-3. Yet for this game Cal Preps has rated Santa Rosa a 7 point favorite. Also how things can change quickly, Montgomery has lost two straight and need to win two of their last three to be playoff eligible. They end the season with a home game with Ukiah and an away game with Maria Carrillo. Santa Rosa is playoff eligible and a win here will set them up with a showdown with Cardinal Newman next week for first place in the North Bay League race. Santa Rosa junior running back Therman McGowan average game is 23 carries 200 yards and 2 touchdowns. The six wins for Santa Rosa is the most they had since 2002. Another point on how times have changed…

ELSIE ALLEN (0-7, 0-4) at UKIAH (3-3-1, 2-2)…Ukiah is in the same boat as Montgomery needing two of three to be playoff eligible. They end the regular season with road games at Montgomery and Cardinal Newman.. They have won two straight..two of their losses to Petaluma and Santa Rosa were by a combined 6 points. They have basically won and loss when they are suppose to except for the opening game tie with Sonoma. Ukiah quarterback Kyle Morris leads the NBL in passing yards.

SATURDAY’S GAMES
RANCHO COTATE (5-2, 3-1) at PINER (1-6, 0-4)…After back to back wins over Santa Rosa and Montgomery, Rancho Cotate looking like a Top 3 Seed in the North Coast Section Playoffs. Their last three opponents in the regular season have a combined record of 3-18. Rancho Cotate’s defense held Montgomery rushing game to 102 yards in 40 carries in their 31-9 win last week.

CARDINAL NEWMAN (5-1-1, 4-0) at MARIA CARRILLO (2-5, 2-2), 1 p.m….Maria Carrillo needs three straight wins to become playoff eligible. After Cardinal Newman they finish up with Rancho Cotate and Montgomery. Cardinal Newman can afford to lose one more game and still get at least a piece of the North Bay League Title and still probably a No. 1 Seed in the North Coast Section Playoffs. But there is no room for error for a repeat trip to the State Championship Game.

SCL(ALL GAMES FRIDAY NIGHT)
CASA GRANDE (5-1-1, 3-1) at HEALDSBURG (7-0, 3-0)…The game of the year in Sonoma County this side of Montgomery-Cardinal Newman. Been building up for weeks. The stakes are obvious. A Casa win throws the SCL race into a mess…a Healdsburg win give them solid control. Also both teams are rated No. 3 in their Respective Redwood Empire Playoff rankings so they need to keep winning to get a home game in the early rounds of the NCS Playoffs. The two teams split the last two season, Healdsburg winning 24-21 two years ago and tieing Casa Grande for the SCL Championship, the only year since 2002 Casa hasn’t won it outright. Last season Casa held off Healdsburg 21-19.

ANALY (2-4, 1-2) at SONOMA VALLEY (5-1-1, 3-1)…Sonoma needs the win to keep pace on whatever happens in Healdsburg and to state their case for a home game in the NCS Playoffs. Analy coming off a bye week has lost three of four. They have scored at least 21 points in all but one of their games. Analy’s David Glass, in one less game, leads Sonoma County in passing yardage and touchdown passes. His two receivers Ross Bostock and Joe Maloney are No.2 and 3 in receiving yardage in Sonoma County. The game will be broadcasted by Sonoma Radio KSVY 91.3 FM. Kickoff is at 7:30.
PETALUMA (3-4, 1-2)at WINDSOR 3-4. 1-2)…Another huge game with playoff implications. Both need to win two of three to become playoff eligible. Petaluma has lost four of five, Windsor three of four. Windsor has won three of the last four games vs. Petaluma.

EL MOLINO (2-5, 0-4) AT EUREKA (3-4)…El Molino’s turn for the league bye and the long trip up north. After a 2-1 start El Molino has lost four straight. Eureka has won three of four all the wins against teams under .500. They need to win two of three and they will be playoff eligible. .

One other game of note: Saturday’s Marin Catholic (2-5) at Redwood (4-3)…This in some ways is like a playoff game. This is Marin Catholic’s first game vs. a 3A team so a win here would make them playoff eligible. Redwood is 1-1 vs. 3A teams, beating Windsor and losing to Petaluma. This is the last 3A opponent for both teams.
