HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEW…NOT YOUR REGULAR MONTGOMERY-SANTA ROSA MATCHUP
October 25th, 2007 . by JoetheSportsGuyFolklore has it, that at one time the Montgomery-Santa Rosa matchup was called ” THE Big Game”. That must have been a LONG time ago because I don’t remember them and I am pretty old. But then with the stats that the Press Democrat threw out at –you would have to be pretty old to remember them.
Santa Rosa hasn’t won a game vs. Montgomery since 1990. For you that is challenged at math that was 17 years ago.
Jason Frenchi’s lifetime record vs. Santa Rosa is 24-3. That stat in itself tells you how long ago that the Montgomery-Santa Rosa matchup was considered “the Big Game”.If you were in a time warp and missed the first half of this season you probably would be as confused as confused can be.
There it is: Montgomery (3-3-1, 2-2) at Santa Rosa (6-1, 3-1) on this Friday’s line up. You would swear that the records are backwards.
Even more you would think if they are backwards, Santa Rosa a .500 team is still hard to comprehend. To make sure you are not going wacko you check out the Cal Preps prediction on the game and the prediction there says Santa Rosa 24 Montgomery 17. Now you know you are going crazy.
The last time that Santa Rosa was over .500 going into the Montgomery game was the final regular season game of 2002. That was also the last season Santa Rosa ended over .500 and made the NCS Playoffs.
Final score: Montgomery 48 Santa Rosa 13. So even when Santa Rosa had a good team, a competitive team…Final Score: Montgomery 48 Santa Rosa 13.
Since that season–and going into this season –Montgomery was a combined 38-9-1 overall and 24-3-1 in NBL play. Santa Rosa 4-36 overall…3-25 in NBL play. In fact Montgomery has won more playoff games in that time then Santa Rosa won overall.
If those numbers don’t slap you in the face try this. The 2005 game, a Montgomery 33-0 win, was the closest game since that 2002 game. The 33 points is the least Montgomery has scored in this series since that game…and Santa Rosa scored 14 points total…all of those in last seasons 42-14 loss.
Okay that’s piling on. 15 yards against me and an automatic first down. But you get the idea. Santa Rosa has entered a whole new world in this 2007 football season of competitive football. The turnaround has been both as sudden as it is shocking. When they take the field against Montgomery on Friday Night they will be going up against the ghost of Montgomery games past. You have the feeling with what they have accomplished so far this season…they will be able to handle that to.
