SONOMA COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEW….WEEK 9…TWO REGULAR SEASON GAMES TO GO….
November 2nd, 2007 . by JoetheSportsGuyTwo weeks to go in the regular season and there are seven teams playoff eligible in the 3A bracket with Redwood of Larkspur and Petaluma(see the note in the game preview below on Petaluma) added to the list which also includes Cardinal Newman, Rancho Cotate and Santa Rosa from the North Bay League along with Sonoma and Casa Grande from the Sonoma County League. There will be at least one more team added to the list after action this week. All together four other teams still have a shot at being considered for the 3A playoffs. There has been times over the past few season that even having eight teams qualify for the bracket might not happen. Doesn’t look like any such problem this season.
As for the 2A bracket it looks like Healdsburg will be the only team from Sonoma County to be eligible, although Analy still has a shot. The only way Analy can become eligible is if they beat Healdsburg in the regular season finale.
Other Sonoma County teams that could see playoff action is Cloverdale in the 1A bracket and St. Vincents of Petaluma in Class B.
NORTH BAY LEAGUE PREVIEW
FRIDAY NIGHT GAMES
CARDINAL NEWMAN (6-1-1, 5-0) AT SANTA ROSA (6-2, 3-2)….Both teams are playoff eligible(Cardinal Newman looks like the No. 1 seed). A win for Cardinal Newman cinches at least a tie for the North Bay League crown. Cardinal Newman has a six game winning streak. Santa Rosa has lost two of three since their 5-0 start. Santa Rosa needs one more league win to finish at least .500 in league play for the first time since 2002 when they finished 3-3-1. That season the tie was with Cardinal Newman, the last time they didn’t lose to them.
UKIAH (4-3-1, 3-2) AT MONTGOMERY (4-3-1, 3-2)…Both teams need a win to become playoff eligible. Ukiah ends the regular season at Cardinal Newman, Montgomery at Maria Carrillo. Ukiah has won three straight. Montgomery snapped a two game losing streak last week beating Santa Rosa 20-6. Montgomery has won three straight against Ukiah.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON GAME
RANCHO COTATE (6-2, 4-1) AT MARIA CARRILLO (2-6, 2-3)…Rancho Cotate, one of three teams shooting for a #2 seed in the playoffs, has a four game winning streak which includes wins over Santa Rosa and Montgomery. Maria Carrillo has lost three of four and their loss to Cardinal Newman last week eliminated them from playoff consideration.
ELSIE ALLEN (0-8, 0-5) AT PINER (1-7, 0-5)…Both teams looking for their first league win. Piner’s only league win in 2006 was against Elsie Allen.
SONOMA COUNTY LEAGUE PREVIEW
ALL GAMES FRIDAY NIGHT
HEALDSBURG (7-1, 3-1) AT PETALUMA (4-4, 2-2)….Healdsburg tries to rebound after losing their first game of the season last week to Casa Grande. If they win their last two games and Sonoma doesn’t lose their league finale at Windsor they will be considered SCL champions for the playoffs. Last week it said in this space that Petaluma needed to win two of three to become playoff eligible. That turned out to be wrong(I think). Petaluma is now 3-3 against 3A teams and with their last two games against 2A teams they have cinched being eligible. Still with it looking like more then eight teams will become playoff eligible every win helps. Healdsburg has beaten Petaluma the last two seasons.
EL MOLINO (2-6, 0-4) AT CASA GRANDE (6-1-1, 4-1)….Casa Grande is coming off their biggest and best win of the season. A win here cinches them at least a share of the SCL title for the fifth straight season. For them to be considered SCL champions for playoff consideration they need Sonoma to lose their league finale to Windsor. Casa is hoping for a # 2 seed in the NCS Playoffs. El Molino is coming off a heartbreaking 27-23 loss to Eureka and has lost five straight.
WINDSOR (3-5, 1-3) AT ANALY (2-5, 1-3)…Both teams still have a shot at being playoff eligible. Windsor needs to win their last two games(they end the season with a home game with Sonoma). This game has no playoff baring for Analy (expect for scoring brownie points with the committee. Winning or losing this game they would still have a must win situation against Healdsburg in their finale to become playoff eligible in the 2A bracket. The two teams have split the last four seasons.
SONOMA (6-1-1) AT SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL OF SAN FRANCISCO (5-3)…Sonoma’s bye from league play has them going to Kezar Stadium. Sonoma one of the teams trying to keep their resume in order for a #2 seed in the NCS playoffs, so a win would help that cause.
They could be still considered SCL champions for playoff purposes if they win their finale at Windsor and Healdsburg loses one of their last two games. Sacred Heart Cathedral started the season 3-0. They do own a win over Petaluma 31-10. They travel to Casa Grande next week. Sonoma edged Sacred Heart Cathedral 28-27 last season.
3A PLAYOFFS AT A GLANCE:
ELIGIBLE: Cardinal Newman, Rancho Cotate, Santa Rosa, Casa Grande, Sonoma, Petaluma, Redwood and the winner of this weeks Ukiah-Montgomery game.
WORK TO DO : The loser of the Ukiah-Montgomery game, Eureka, and Windsor. The loser of the Ukiah-Montgomery game would need to win their finale to be eligible. Eureka need to win at least one of their last two games and Windsor needs to win both.
