HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEW WEEK 10…SAYING GOOD BYE TO THE REGULAR SEASON
November 8th, 2007 . by JoetheSportsGuyWhere has the football season gone? This is it for the regular season with both the NBL and SCL championships still to be decided, although both leagues at least know who one of the co champions will be. One team knowing they at least have a co-championship can win it all with a win, the other needs help from two teams to win it outright. Of course there is still some jockeying to do for the North Coast Section Playoffs.
NBL(FRIDAY NIGHT)
UKIAH(4-4-1, 3-3) AT CARDINAL NEWMAN(7-1-1, 6-0)….Ukiah needs the win to be eligible for the NCS Playoffs. They might end up looking at two fourth quarter leads against Petaluma and Santa Rosa that slipped away. A win for Cardinal Newman gives them their third outright NBL title in five years and they can save a trip to the NCS Seeding meetings this Sunday…They would own the No. 1 seed.
RANCHO COTATE(7-2, 5-1) AT ELSIE ALLEN (0-9, 0-6)… The expected Rancho win gives them sole possession of 2nd place in the NBL Race and if an upset strikes at Cardinal Newman a co championship. Rancho will be making a pitch for the No. 2 seed in the NCS Playoffs. There best argument for that is wins over Santa Rosa and Montgomery and their two losses are by teams with a combined record of 15-2-1.
PINER(2-7, 1-5) AT SANTA ROSA(6-3, 3-3)….Piner got their league win over Elsie Allen last week. Santa Rosa coming off a just miss loss to Cardinal Newman. The six wins is the most Santa Rosa has had since 2002 when they went 6-4-1, their fourth loss was the last time they were in the playoffs.
SATURDAY AFTERNOON
MONTGOMERY (5-3-1) AT MARIA CARRILLO (2-7, 2-4)…Montgomery has bounced back from a two game losing streak with two impressive wins against playoff contenders. A win here would give them a leg to stand on for a home game in the opening round of the NCS playoff with them having a tie with Casa Grande on the resume.
SCL–All games Friday Night
ANALY (2-6, 1-4) AT HEALDSBURG (8-1, 4-1)…A win for Healdsburg will give them a piece of the SCL championship for the second time in three years. They not only need the win but also a Sonoma win to be considered league champions for the playoffs. If they end up in a two way tie with Casa Grande head to head takes over and Casa would be playoff league champions. How much that means in Division 2A is debatable with the top seeds all looking like League Champions. Analy, despite a four game losing streak, is 1-1 vs. 2A teams so a win will make them eligible for NCS consideration. The last time these two teams meant in Healdsburg was 2005 in a game won by Analy 43-28. Healdsburg went into the game 8-0 and the loss cost them sole possession of the 2005 SCL Championship.
SONOMA (7-1-1, 4-1) AT WINDSOR (4-5, 2-3)….Like Healdsburg, Sonoma needs the win to get a piece of the SCL championship with Casa Grande. A Healdsburg loss and a Sonoma win would give them league champion designate for the 3A playoffs, which could mean something if Sonoma doesn’t get the #2 seed like they are hoping. Sonoma’s best argument for a #2 seed is wins over Casa Grande and Montgomery. Windsor needs the win to be eligible to the 3A playoffs.
PETALUMA (4-5, 2-3) AT EL MOLINO (2-7, 0-5)…Petaluma is 3-3 vs. 3A teams so they are already eligible for the NCS Playoffs. With more then eight teams eligible they still need the win to make sure, especially with Eureka one of the eligible teams and they can claim a win over El Molino.
SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL OF SAN FRANCISCO (5-4) AT CASA GRANDE (7-1, 5-1)…With the league bye Casa has already cinched a share of the SCL Title for the fifth straight season. They need Sonoma to lose to be declared league champion for NCS purposes and of course if Sonoma and Healdsburg both lose they will win it outright. Casa is gunning for a No. 2 seed, for that this is a must win. Casa’s best argument for a #2 seed is the tie Montgomery, the one sided wins over Healdsburg and Petaluma and having a defense that has given up a area best 7 points a game. This is the third time Sacred Heart Cathedral has met a Sonoma County League team. They beat Petaluma 31-10 in Week 5 and lost to Sonoma 21-17 last week. Last year in the regular season finale Sacred Heart Cathedral beat Casa Grande 28-17 at Kezar.
