Eleven Sonoma County teams making the 2007 North Coast Section Playoffs.
The numbers by their name is their seeds…the spread is from CalPreps.
All games kickoff at 7 pm

THE 3A BRACKET
FRIDAY NIGHT
NO. 8 REDWOOD (7-3) AT NO. 1 CARDINAL NEWMAN (8-1-1)
…The two teams with the longest winning streak in the 3A bracket.  Cardinal Newman after a 0-1-1 start has won eight straight, Redwood after an 0-3 start has won seven straight.  Its the second season in a row that Redwood is the eight seed, last season they lost to Montgomery 21-13 in the first round.  Redwood, who has never won an NCS Playoff game, came in 2nd in the Marin County League race two games behind Novato.   Their first win was over Windsor 21-20, a game they trailed 20-3 at the half.  One of their three losses was to Petaluma the 2nd week of the season.    Cardinal Newman, the North Bay League Champions, starts quest of their third straight North Coast Section Championship and with it hoping for a return trip to the State Championship Game.  The winner of this game meets the winner of the Montgomery-Sonoma game.  Cardinal Newman is a 15 point favorite.

NO. 7 PETALUMA (5-5) vs.  NO. 2 RANCHO COTATE (8-2) AT SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL…Rematch of a Week 3 game won by Rancho Cotate 41-21.  Rancho Cotate scored the first 27 points of the second half to break a 14-14 halftime tie.  Petaluma finished in a 4th place tie with Windsor in the SCL race.  They have scored at least 30 points in four of their last five games.  Rancho Cotate, riding a six game winning streak, was hoping to have their home field ready for the playoffs, that didn’t happen so the game is at Santa Rosa High School.  Rancho Cotate’s two losses are to teams with a combined record of 17-2-1.  They have scored at least 30 points in the last five games.  The winner will meet the winner of the Santa Rosa-Casa Grande game.   Rancho Cotate is a 8 point favorite.

SATURDAY GAMES
NO. 5 MONTGOMERY (6-3-1) AT NO. 4 SONOMA (7-2-1)…
One of the best, if not the best interleague matchup in Sonoma County that plays out yearly in the preleague part of the schedule, plays out in the playoffs.  Sonoma beat Montgomery 12-3 back in Week 2 , which is the reason this game is in Sonoma instead of Montgomery.  The head coaches, Jason Frenchi at Montgomery and Mick O’Meara of Sonoma have combined for 50 seasons and 357 career wins.  Sonoma needs to bounce back from the regular season finale, a 25-13 loss to Windsor which cost them a Co Sonoma County League Championship.  Montgomery finished third in the North Bay League and has won three straight.  All there losses and the tie were to teams Seeded 1-4 in these 3A playoffs.  The last time these two met in the playoffs was in 2004, Montgomery winning 42-14 in the semi-final.  Montgomery won the North Coast Section Championship a week later. The winner meets the winner of the Redwood-Cardinal Newman game.  Sonoma is a one point favorite

NO. 6 SANTA ROSA (7-3) AT NO. 3 CASA GRANDE (8-1-1)….Santa Rosa returns to the playoffs for the first time since 2002.  Between then and now they hit rock bottom losing 20 straight games, a streak they broke with a 38-27 win over Casa Grande to start the 2006 season.  For Casa Grande this is getting normal, 2002 is the last season they missed the NCS Playoffs and since then they are 5-4 in the playoffs and made it to the NCSRE championship game in both 2003 and 2004, losing both of those games to undefeated teams(Eureka in 2003 and Montgomery in 2004).  The game features the two leading rushers for 2007 in Sonoma County,  Santa Rosa’s Therman McGowan and Casa Grande’s Anthony Biasi.  The winner meets the winner of the Petaluma-Rancho Cotate game.  Casa Grande is a 16 point favorite

CLASS 2A
FRIDAY NIGHT

ANALY(2-7) AT HEALDSBURG(9-1)…The mess that is the 2A playoffs.  Only seven teams qualified, so No. 1 Novato gets a first round bye.  Healdsburg got the No. 2 seed, but its a hollow No. 2 because of Sonoma’s loss to Windsor last week they are not designated league champions, so if they get they do win this game with Analy they will most likely still have to make the long trip to Del Norte for the semi final game.  Healdsburg defeated Analy last week 33-21.  Analy has not won a game since September 28th and has lost six straight.  They got in because of their 2-2 record vs. 2A teams.   This game features the two top passing games in Sonoma County for 2007.Analy’s David Glass and Healdsburg’s Cory Harms are 1-2 in passing yardage.  Also Healdsburg’s Jared Garcia is the only receiver in Sonoma County to have over 1,000 yards receiving and caught a county high 14 touchdown passes.  Not far behind is Analy’s Ross Bostock and Joe Maloney at No. 2-3 in receiving yardage in the county.  This is the fourth straight season that Healdsburg has made the playoffs.  The winner of this game meets the winner of the Del Norte-Fortuna game which has the same story as the Analy-Healdsburg game.  Del Norte(9-0) is league champion of the Humboldt Del Norte and beat Fortuna (5-5) twice during the regular season by an average of 38 points a game.  The 2A bracket has two of the four undefeated teams in the North Coast Section, No. 1 seed Novato the other one. Healdsburg is a 14 point favorite.
CLASS A
Friday game

CLOVERDALE(7-3) AT ST PATRICKS/ST VINCENT (VALLEJO)(10-0)…Cloverdale one of the good stories of the season. They came into the season with a 17 game losing streak and had lost twenty six of twenty eight and our playoff bound.   Two of their three losses were to a Class A playoff team.  The last time Cloverdale was in the playoffs was in 2002. Their reward is a  St Patricks/St. Vincents which is one of four teams in the North Coast Playoffs undefeated.  They won the Bayshore League and all but two of their wins is by at least 18 points.   Their closest game was against Ferndale which was a 27-21 Week 3 home win.  Ferndale is seeded No. 2 in the Class A Bracket.  St. Patricks/St. Vincents is the defending Class A champions and overall has won 19 straight. The winner of this game will meet the winner of the Kings Academy-Clear Lake game. St Patricks/St. Vincent is a  27 point favorite

CLASS B

No. 1 St Vincents of Petaluma(7-3) bye….St. Vincents is the No. 1 seed in a six team field and have a first round bye.  They will meet the winner of the Hoopa-Point Arena Game on November 23rd.

Darn sight better that Heldsburg makes the long drive up here than Del Norte makes the long drive down there.
Del Norte and Novato finished 1,2 last year and niether has lost since then so Del Norte should have gotten the 2 seed in the first place. Strength of schedule is what it is and not up to the teams playing in there league. Besides, Healdsburg never did return the game of 6 years or so that we traveled down ther for. Most inhospitable place we have ever been to. No place to change or anything more than an outhouse after an all day bus ride. I hope they enjoy the scenery of our Redwoods and rivers on the trip up to God’s country.
