NORTH COAST SECTION REDWOOD EMPIRE 3A CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
NO. 2 RANCHO COTATE (10-2) VS. NO. 1 CARDINAL NEWMAN (10-1-1) FRIDAY NIGHT AT SANTA ROSA HIGH SCHOOL: The teams that finished one-two in the North Bay League Race square off for the 3A North Coast Section Redwood Empire Championship. The difference in the race was the league opener won by Cardinal Newman 29-10. That was a game that was unlike the other personality of these teams games as both are averaging 30 points a game. In that game Rancho Cotate turned the ball over six times and fell behind 17-0, cut it to 17-10 and Newman scored that last two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Newman’s first touchdown was 80 yard interception return by Wyatt Zanardi. The last time Rancho Cotate beat Cardinal Newman was in 2005. Since then Newman has won five Straight including a 26-23 double overtime win in the 2005 NCS Playoffs. Cardinal Newman hasn’t been tested in the playoffs. In the opening round vs. Redwood they jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first seven minutes in a 35-14 win and in the second round they led Sonoma 28-0 at the half on their way to a 37-6 win. Rancho Cotate has been tested in both games. Round 1 they defeated Petaluma 35-28 and in Round 2 they fell behind 10-0 to Casa Grande before winning 31-10. Cardinal Newman has a ten game winning streak, Rancho Cotate an 8 game winning streak. Cardinal Newman has won the last two North Coast Section Redwood Empire titles and have won 8 straight NCS games. Their last NCS lost was on November 22nd, 2003 to Piner 21-14. Cardinal Newman is looking for their eight NCS Championship. Rancho Cotate has won two, those being in back to back seasons in 2001 and 2002. The winner of this game will meet the winner of the East Bay Bracket in the overall North Coast Section Championship Game Saturday December 8th at the Oakland Coleseum.
