“Open House” Tales from the Trenches! Two Stories of what can and WILL go wrong!
December 3rd, 2007 . by Mike KellyI was mentoring a new agent and she asked if she could do an open house for me. I gave her an address of a property which I had just listed. I told her it wouldn’t have a sign up when she did the open house but to take my Open House signs. I talked to her after the open house and she said the same thing you did. When she got there she couldn’t even find the lockbox, she got via a slider off the backyard and when she entered the house she almost fainted! It was an absolute disaster! ![]()
She immediately jumped into action and started furiously cleaning. She made beds, washed dishes, put the trash out, cleaned off the stove, vacuumed! I told her that was very out of character with my clients. She had a great open house and picked up a couple of buyers and had a very interested party for the property. We drove to the house the next day and got out of my car, I walked across the street to the house and she walked to a house on the OTHER side of the street! Yes! She had held the WRONG HOUSE OPEN!! She had to help me out as I was rolling around on the front lawn laughing hysterically!! She had transposed numbers on the address I gave her. I could only imagine the look on the “Seller’s” face when they came home to their cleaned up house! She even had left a little note on the counter, and thanks God, NOT her business card!!
One other quick story–I had clients who wanted an open house but I was busy. They asked if I could get another agent to do it as they were going on a week’s vacation. I got a new agent I didn’t know very well but who seemed enthusiastic. My clients packed up all their stuff and were leaving the agent showed up. They were out about a 1/3 hour when the wife forgot her prescription pills. They go back and her is the agent with 3 of her friends, having a nice party, having raided their fridge, gotten into their wet bar, had the TV going and where well on their way to a bust out!! I kept the listing but we fired the Agent!
