NFL PICKS…LET THE PLAYOFFS BEGIN

January 4th, 2008 . by JoetheSportsGuy

We now move into the best NFL of the season…playoff time.   While the college games best time is the regular season…and then they throw us bones for games that have very little meaning.   The NFL post season games mean everything if you want to be consider Super Bowl champions.  The next two weeks are my favorite weekends of the NFL season and I thank the weather for what it looks like its going to be so I can be lazy and sit in front of the tube to watch the four games.
Since this is playoff time a little different on the picks…two from each game…Who wins…and against the spread.  So if I’m right on worth two wins….if I’m way off could be worth two misses…or something in between.  Got the spreads noted from the local paper.
Wrapped up the regular season:
WEEK 17:
10-   6   62.5% (Had this mark the last three weeks)
REGULAR SEASON FINAL:   160- 96   62.5% (Guess the 62.5 is my par…and ended up losing to Yahoo’s best by eight games)

Now onto the BIG Games
SATURDAY ON NBC
GAME 1 WASHINGTON (9-7) +3 1/2 AT SEATTLE (10-6)  1:30 PM….
One of the yearly debates about the playoffs is how the team ends.  The biggest myth is a team needs to be playing at its best going into the playoffs.  Myth the keyword.   Myself I never really thought how a team is playing in Week 17 makes any difference coming into that first playoff game.  This game is a prime example of opposite cases.
Washington has been playing playoff like football for a month, while Seattle hasn’t, for example the Seahawks lost to Atlanta last week.
This is a bad example mainly because Seattle hasn’t had to play a playoff brand of football all season.  I mean seriously folks all they had to do was win the NFC West.   Washington will win this game outright not because they played better down the stretch…but because they are the better team.

GAME 2 JACKSONVILLE (11-5) AT   PITTSBURGH  (10-6) +1  5 PM…There was time when the experts were saying that the Steelers were on of the teams that could end New England’s undefeated run…that is until they played New England.  They haven’t been the same since.  Its hard to believe that the Steelers are an underdog for a home playoff game but Jacksonville has been one of the best teams in the league the last half of the season and that includes a win at Pittsburgh.   No reason to think they won’t make it win No. 2 at Pittsburgh.

SUNDAY
GAME 1 NY GIANTS (10-6) +3  AT TAMPA BAY (9-7) 10 AM ON FOX….
This is another match up between teams playing hard to end the regular season and a team mailing it in.  Tampa Bay actually mailed in the last two weeks, losing to the Niners and Carolina.  The Giants gave it all they got and what they got out of it was some respect for playing New England tough.   No matter on each count.   Jeff Garcia has a good track record vs. the Giants in the playoffs and will keep that in tact in the most one sided win of the weekend.

GAME 2 TENNESSEE (10-6) +9 AT SAN DIEGO (11-5)  1:30 PM ON CBS…This is my pick of the weekend.  Tennessee +9.  San Diego hasn’t done anything to warrant such a big spread.  This game will be a lot like San Diego’s season.  They will do what it takes to win, but will scare the heck out of their fans before they can celebrate it.

TO REVIEW…
WASHINGTON +3 1/2 AT SEATTLE…
Washington will win the game.

JACKSONVILLE -1 AT PITTSBURGH…Jacksonville wins a close one

NY GIANTS AT TAMPA BAY -3…The Bucs in the most one sided game of the weekend

TENNESSEE +9 AT SAN DIEGO…It is so tempting to take Tennessee to win, but San Diego will win it…barely.

Joe, Nice call but I gotta think the Giant’s will take Tampa Bay. Mr. Manning looked awfully good against THE TEAM, the Pats. Though I’d like to see Garcia go on I just can’t see them beating teh Giants. Jacksonville over Pittsburg at home? Prett Balsy call there!
