June 20 marks the summer solstice, the first day of summer and the longest day of the year.
At the solstice, it is possible to stand an egg on its end.
True or False?
Well, both, actually. It sounds like real science: On the solstice, the sun’s gravitational pull equals the earth’s and the egg is able to stand on end. But in reality, anyone with a very steady hand can stand an egg on end on a flat surface — any time of the year!
This myth may be rooted in an ancient Chinese belief that an egg can be stood on end at the precise moment winter ends and spring begins.
