Ways to Cut your Energy costs here in Sonoma County and beyond!!

August 13th, 2008 . by Mike Kelly

Consider some small lifestyle changes that we, as consumers, can make to help conserve the energy supply this summer. Just a few small things can add up to big energy savings that will help your pocketbook too.

Simple Steps to Energy Savings:

Replace and recycle your old refrigerator and purchase an energy-efficient model. Refrigerators that are 10 years old can use twice the energy of newer models. Replacing other appliances, such as the air conditioner, microwave and dishwasher, with newer ones can provide similar savings,

Put an insulating blanket around your water heater and weatherstrip around doors and windows

Close windows when heating or cooling. Close off door and vents in unused areas. Make sure your fireplace damper is shut when not in use.

Shut off or turn down automatic appliances when you go on vacation.

Avoid “sleep mode” energy drains by shutting off computers, printers and FAX machines when not in use.

Fix dripping faucets right away and look for other leaks that may be wasting water. A single dripping hot water faucet can waste 212 gallons of water a month.

Barbeque outside to save cooking and cooling costs inside. Save more if you use charcoal this summer.

Wash and dry only full loads of clothes.  Be sure to clean your dryer’s lint trap and clean out ducts. On sunny days, hang your laundry outside. Hang wet swimsuits, casual or children’s clothing on their plastic hangers from the department store (metal hangers will rust).

Fill the dishwasher before you turn it on to save both water and energy.

Use mechanical time switches for air conditioner, sprinklers, evening lighting.

Change the filters on the furnace and air-conditioner regularly following manufacturer’s instructions.

Watch thermostat settings. Three to five percent more energy is used for each degree the furnace is set above 68 degrees and for each degree the air conditioner is set below 78 degrees.

Budget permitting, insulate ceilings to R-30 standards. Replace old windows with new high performance dual pane windows. Install shades, awnings or sunscreens on windows facing south and/or west to block summer light.
PG&E offers rebates on new appliances.  Just go to www.pge.com for a list of available rebates.
