JOE THE SPORTSGUY RETURNS!!!!!!
August 15th, 2008 . by JoetheSportsGuyI can feel the excitement. As getting used to it being the middle of summer and school starting…what a combination.
While I was gone some catching up…
The Soap Opera: Last season I wrote and I quote “the NFL World is a better place when Brett Favre has a win”. Talk about overstaying your welcome. I’m retiring for $20 million, I’m going to be a Packer, Release or Trade Me. Their is plenty of blame to go around to both sides as that whole thing played out, but Favre made the biggest mistake by going on Fox News Gretas show and blasting the Packer management. After that it was obvious it would take a miracle for them to kiss and make up. It will be hard to be a Jet fan this season.
Feel Sorry For: Not so hard being a Packer fan, but…The weight on Aaron Rodgers shoulders maybe overwhelming. Steve Young faked of getting a Monkey off his Back when he won his Super Bowl with the Niners, for Rodgers it a Blue Whale on his back. I learned that is the World’s Biggest Animal by watching “Are You Smarter Then A Fifth Grader”, which I am finding out I’m not. Rodgers is going to held to a standard that he has no way of keeping, unless the Packers win a Super Bowl. Their will be a lot of short memories on how great and perfect Favre was every time Rodgers throws an Incompletion or an Interception or when the Packers lose a game and God help him if the Packers miss the playoffs. Remember back in the 2005 Draft their was a debate who the Niners would take with the first pick of the draft….Smith or Rodgers. Both are wishing the Niners would of make the different pick.
Speaking Of…The way the Niners have treated Alex Smith is criminal. You can understand the changes in Offensive Coordinators year after year to a certain point, but the rest is shameful. Putting him in an offensive plan that had him handcuffed, continuing playing him last season when the whole world could see he was hurt and now this. He has to compete for the starting Quarterback position with two guys who combined hasn’t pass for 600 yards in their career. The starter, at least so far, six games in four seasons–13 for 26-148 yards-1 touchdown-2 interception. That isn’t his average game…its his CAREER stats. Looks like a fun season. Someday Alex Smith will start a playoff game, but Mike Nolan won’t be his coach…and the Niners will not be his team.
Getting That Bad Feeling Again…When the Niners signed Trent Dilfer two years ago their was a general excitement he would be a good teacher for Smith. My first thought was “Yeah but what if he has to play”. Saw the results of that last season didn’t we. Same feeling with hiring of Mike Martz. He is suppose to be a Offensive Guru, which the Niners need (actually they need an offense), but in the same vein as the Vice President being a heartbeat away from being President, Martz is a heartbeat away from being Head Coach. With the Niners schedule the way it is I would be surprised if Nolan makes it to the Bye which is in Week 9. The though of Martz as the Niner Head Coach is as thrilling to me as it was having Trent Dilfer as their quarterback.
If You Enjoyed the Bay Area Baseball Season…You’ll enjoy the Bay Area Football Season. The over/under for wins of the Niners and Raiders combined is 10 and I wouldn’t be surprised if they pick 1-2 in next years draft and have new Head Coaches.
One Giant Note: Get rid of Barry Zito NOW. Maybe some team will be stupid enough to resign him and eat some of that monster contract.
College Football: Georgia is the first of at least five teams that will have No. 1 spot in the country during the season. So you can set the Countdown Clock the first College Football weekend of the season begins onThursday August 28th. That first week includes a thrilling cross state rivalry games between Youngstown State and Ohio State and the always thrilling Georgia Southern-Georgia game. Stay tuned for those thrillers.
High School: Even though school starts earlier and earlier every year..the Football Season doesn’t start until after Labor Day. The state playoff structure has changed and I still haven’t gotten my hands wrapped around which teams are in what Division. One thing I do know that we cannot have a Cardinal Newman-Montgomery playoff game because they are in different divisions. More about that as we go along with the season.
Very Early Top 5…(Not much different then last season and subject to change…)
1. Cardinal Newman… No shock. They open on September 12th hosting Central Catholic which is becoming a Season Opening Traditional for The lead team for the State Championship game..and yes these two teams are still in the same Division…I think…
2. Rancho Cotate….After playing every game on the road last season, they open up their brand new Football Field this season.
3. Casa Grande….Favorite to win their Sixth Straight Sonoma County League Title.
4. Montgomery….This is the 50th anniversary of Montgomery High School. They are hoping to have a better year then the Giants did for their 50th birthday party.
5. Windsor…Dark horse pick of a school that had one of the best JV teams in the area.
Till the next time…any comments leave them here….
