SONOMA COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL RANKING AFTER WEEK 2

This is a tough one after seeing No. 1 Cardinal Newman get handled easily by Del Oro. You get the idea though that Del Oro would do that to every Sonoma County Team so how much do you penalize Cardinal Newman for playing the toughest preleague schedule in the area. Well just a little and I don’t like the tie thing but… Read the rest of this entry »

Joe Pasquini’s Sonoma County High School Preview: Week 2 (but who’s counting!)

September 12th, 2007 . by JoetheSportsGuy
SONOMA COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEW WEEK 2
Week 2 schedule features six, count them, six Interleague matchups between the Sonoma County and North Bay Leagues. Also the weekend ends with a game that could have State Playoff Ramifications at the end of the season.
FRIDAY NIGHT
Montgomery (1-0) at Sonoma (0-0-1)…This match up is the Redwood Empire version of Michigan-Notre Dame(when those two teams were relevant). Both teams usually in the thick of their races. Montgomery has dominated the series the past few years. The head coaches, Jason Frenchi at Montgomery and Mick O’Meara of Sonoma have combined for 50 seasons and 345 career wins.More…
Santa Rosa (1-0) at Windsor (1-0)…Both teams coming off impressive opening week wins. This is one of those matchups that could have a bearing on NCS Playoff picks in November.
Piner (1-0) at Healdsburg (1-0)…What a difference a half makes for Piner’s outlook on life. They rallied from a 38-14 deficit to beat Analy 42-38 in their opener. Good tonic for a team that won two games last season. They meet a Healdsburg team who started off their season with a 27 point first quarter vs. Kelseyville.
Petaluma (1-0) at Ukiah (0-0-1)…Although not as dramatic as Piners both these teams had fourth quarter rallies from two scores down in their openers to save a losing start.
Maria Carrillo (0-1) at Casa Grande (1-0)….Another preleague traditional match up dominated by Casa Grande at least during their regular season match up. Maria Carrillo did beat Casa in the 2005 Playoffs. Casa looked as good as advertised in Week 1.
Elsie Allen (0-1) at El Molino (0-1)…Both teams hope to rebound after one side losses to kick things off
Burton (0-1) at Analy (0-1)…Analy trying to forget the second half collapse against Piner. Burton is from San Francisco
SATURDAY
Rancho Cotate (1-0) at Jesse Bethel (1-0)…Rancho takes the trip to Vallejo and tries to avenge last season 43-14 to Jesse Bethel
Del Oro (1-0) at Cardinal Newman (0-0-1)…After opening up with a tie with the No. 1 Division III team in Northern California it doesn’t get any easier for Cardinal Newman as here comes the No. 1 Division II team. Last season Cardinal Newman scored two defensive touchdowns in a 14-7 win on the road.

Joe Pasquini’s Sonoma County High School Football Recap Week 1 Much more to follow!!

SONOMA COUNTY RECAP WEEK 1

An interesting week to say the least to kick things off:TIES: I forgot there was such a thing…but two this week. Ukiah and Sonoma 20-20, and then THE tie…Cardinal Newman-Central Catholic 35-35

RALLYS: The biggest was Piner rallying from 38-14 third quarter deficit to beat Analy 42-38….The ties makes this list to…Cardinal Newman down 26-7 at half to come back and get theirs and Sonoma down 20-7 in the fourth to get theirs..

THAT ONE TIE: It says in today’s Press Democrat that the coaches of Cardinal Newman and Central Catholic agreed after the regulation not to play the overtime. You can bet the state bowl committee is hoping for something to happen bad to one of these teams between now and then. Had that happened last season, Newman’s lost to Montgomery would of been fatal as far as the State Playoff game mattered.

NO AUTOMATICS: In the two ties, three of the four teams missed extra points on their last touchdowns to prevent wins, including both Central Catholic and Cardinal Newman.

LEADING NUMBERS: Jumping out of the gate on a good note(most of the big stats from running backs)…

Cardinal Newman’s Max Pond, first game as starting quarterback…400 yards total offense. 27-49 338 passing….20-86 rushing…Windsor Junior Garrett Kelloughs…16 carries 197 yards 3 touchdowns (one of the touchdowns 97 yards) in Windsors win over Maria Carrillo

Montgomery Jeff Marks…outshined Lincolns David Henderson…186 yards rushing in Montgomerys win over Lincoln…

and Cloverdale Tyler Lawson 25 carries for 204 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Eagles snapped a 17 game winning streak with a win over Elsie Allen.
